What is a misdemeanor?

A misdemeanor is considered a “lesser” criminal act in a legal system. Typically, misdemeanors are punished with monetary fines. All crimes punishable with incarceration of less than one year is considered a misdemeanor. Examples of misdemeanors could include possession of marijuana, disorderly conduct, trespassing, public intoxication, and disorderly conduct. Class A misdemeanors carry a sentence of one year of imprisonment, while Class B misdemeanors are not expected to exceed three months.
